“Out Here in Kansas” is a short documentary that explores the tumultuous relationship between Christians and the LGBT community in the Midwest.

The film centers around three men whose lives have intertwined.

The first is physician Burt Humburg, a small-town Kansas Christian who came out of the closet after becoming an All-American college football player.

The second is Burt’s former pastor, Joe Wright of Central Christian Church, who in 2005 was instrumental in making gay marriage unlawful in the state of Kansas.

The third is the filmmaker himself: Adam Knapp, a Christian whose life has been affected by both Burt and Pastor Joe. He wrote about Burt as a journalist. Like Burt, he was a member of Pastor’s Joe’s church. Adam got both men together for a spirited discussion on the topic of Christians and the gay community.

“Out Here In Kansas” highlights testimonial excerpts from a handful of gay Kansans, including Grammy Award-winning musician Melissa Etheridge and Matthew Vines, author of “God and the Gay Christian.” Its mission is not to judge Christians or the LGBT community, but to explore at both sides and invoke open-minded discussion.
