Worried about his impending death, an elderly shut-in sets out in a lawless town to hire a for-profit preacher (complete with his own malevolent God) looking for any sort of miracle to keep him alive. He strikes a deal with the preacher only to end up as a baby-sitter for a gang that kidnaps children for ransom. When no ransom comes, the old man offers to pay and is quickly rejected. Lacking the physical prowess to take on the gang, the senior wavers, then attempts a quixotic rescue of the child, despite the warnings of the preacher.
